Each morning you’ll see a young woman walk across the Bermuda grass lawn from the farmhouse to the barn. Birds chirp. Sun warms the air. She wears the long dress and white bonnet of Mennonite tradition. She takes a crate of onions, sits on a stool and with her knife glinting in the morning sun, starts peeling.
Meanwhile, two of her brothers are preparing other ingredients–tomatoes, jalapeños, sweet peppers. The stainless steel counter tops are spotless. Against the walls are sacks of sugar and salt, cases of vinegar and cases of canning jars. In the middle of the room is the kettle. Her father, Robert, holds a sheet of paper with the recipe for this morning’s batch, though he knows it by heart.
My name is Jay and I discovered this little homestead in the Texas countryside several years ago. Since that day, I have not bought another jar of salsa or jam at the grocery store. At my house, we had two grocery lists: what we needed from the store and what we needed from Robert’s barn.
When holidays rolled around I would stock up on Robert’s salsas and jams and create gift baskets. Our friends and family simply loved them. There is something special, in the recipes, the quality, and the small operation that you can taste.
When the opportunity came for me to start a new business, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I asked Robert, “What’s your market? Where do you sell most of your products?”
Robert is open and direct: “Mostly farmer’s markets.”
I asked, “Can I sell them on the internet?”
“Sure,” he answered.
And with a handshake, Salsa-Basket.com was born.
Why We Give
This is my son, Bodie. He suffered a brain injury when he was 6 months old. Even though he can’t walk or talk, he is full of smiles and inspiration. Every day he reminds me of the most important things in life: never giving up, hard work, patience, kindness and love.
For every jar that we sell on this site, we donate 50 cents to charity. The charities we support are: Ronald McDonald House, Make A Wish Foundation, and Give Kids the World Village.
Thank you for your support.
